"HATS OFF TO MOM"

Sr Mary Parks

The Mother's Day luncheon benefiting Sisters Place was an occasion to honor all mothers and also an occasion to show off some spectacular hats!

Guests savored the luncheon buffet prepared by G & K Banquet Hall and the dozens of cookies donated by members of the events committee, the Columbiettes Council #4600, and friends of Sisters Place while the talented keyboardist Katie Palumbo provided the background music and models wove their way among the table to choruses of "ooohs" and "ahhhs " over stunning outfits and accessories by Tracy's Place, S.S.W.U.N. by Energy, and Blemah Doo's African Marketplace.

The highlight of the afternoon was the presentation of the Hats Off to Mom Awards.

Community members so honored were Evon Scott, Lillian Gibson, and Edith Nesti.

    Evon

Evon Scott, a teacher and administrator in the Clairton School District for many many years, received the award for being "like a mom" to so many children throughout her life and career. She is an active, involved member of Morningstar Baptist Church as well as the NAACP, the National Education Association, and the Pennsylvania State Education Association.

    Lillian
Lillian Gibson was honored for her volunteer work in Clairton over the entire course of her adult life. This 92-year-old mother, a registered practical nurse at St. Francis Hospital for 24 years, is an active volunteer for Meals on Wheels, Cherry Lane Social Club, Gethsemane Church of God and Christ, and the local food bank advisory committee at Carver Hall in Clairton.

Edith Nesti, who passed away November 7, 2007, at the age of 101, raised three daughters while she worked as a tin flopper and co-owned a sewing business. She volunteered through her church, St. Clare of Assisi, was a charter member of Clairton Meals on Wheels, and belonged to the Clairton Garden Club. An expert with crochet needles, she provided hundreds of afghans for people in care facilities.

Sisters Place Mom Awardee is Marie Richardson.

It was certainly a "hats off to moms" occasion, but it was also an absolutely breath-taking "hats on parade" extravangza.
