ABOUT US | OUR SERVICES | FOCUS ON CHILDREN | EVENTS | VOLUNTEER Our History Sisters Place, Inc., was founded in 1993 by a group of 14 Catholic religious communities. These women wanted to serve the needs of those who were poor. They chose to provide housing and supportive services to single mothers and their children. ![]() Because of the Mon Valley area's acute need for such programming, the members selected Clairton, Pennsylvania, as the home of Sisters Place. The founders believed it important that Sisters Place residents be part of a larger community, and so
after aggressive fundraising, they purchased 16 apartments within the 450-unit Century Townhomes complex. Shortly thereafter the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded Sisters Place a grant of $1 million for the acquisition, rehabilitation, and operation of housing units to provide permanent supportive housing for single mothers and their children. Additional grants and loans were secured for renovation and rehabilitation of the housing units. Construction began in October 1996, and six months later, the first family moved into their newly renovated home in Sisters Place's Permanent Housing Program. In April 2000, with additional funding from HUD, Sisters Place added a Transitional Housing Program. Sisters Place has served over 140 different families to date. In 2007 9 of the 13 families who left our program moved on to independent housing. HOME | ABOUT US | OUR SERVICES | FOCUS ON CHILDREN | EVENTS | VOLUNTEER 8/11/08
